Infrastructure

Virginia is home to some of the oldest buildings and cities in the United States. Our complex terrain requires a unique infrastructural network of huge bridges, numerous long highways, suburban towns, mountain-top communications relays, heavily populated cities, and countless recreational areas. All of which demands constant inspection and repairs that, until now, required thousands of man-hours, years of planning, and dangerous conditions for our state workers.

Our long history and constantly developing modern cities present an interesting challenge for those who are in charge of inspecting our state's infrastructure and utilities. As structures age, routine inspection and repair become more frequent. The current inspection process for buildings and bridges is dangerous, time-consuming, and costly. UAVs can help us inspect structures of all types at a fraction of the time, cost, and effort required today. Advanced photography and scanning can provide us with information on material conditions that would otherwise be invisible to the human eye.

UAVs can also provide traffic and use data, allowing repair crews to better predict future maintenance needs before they become a problem. Nowhere else will you find a more diverse infrastructural network that will soon put UAVs in high demand for inspection and repair purposes.

Recently, Dominion Power announced that they would be starting a test project to utilize UAVs when inspecting high voltage power lines.
