Complete independence is a challenge for those who are physically unable to drive or travel by themselves due to physical or mental impairments. Self-driving cars of the future will mean that a blind person will be able to drive themselves to work, or a paraplegic will no longer have to depend on a friend or family member to escort them to the store.
As the video above shows, TORC Robotics, a Virginia company that originated from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, are pioneers of drive-by-wire technology. Amazingly, we can watch as a blind man drives for the first time on a closed course. Not only can he drive straight, but you can see that he's avoiding obstacles and dodging moving hazards as well.
People with impairments will be able to call for their car to come to pick them up like a taxi. (Image Credit: Google)
